Listen to your elders and betters

Every single thing I thought of in the last couple of minutes in response to the prompt ‘what would I tell my 20-year-old self’ was something somebody did in fact tell me at the time.

Sometimes, I just plain didn’t listen. Mainly because I didn’t really understand the advice at the time. Other times, I thought, yeah, yeah, I’m already doing that. (Hint: I wasn’t.) And still other times, I just thought I knew better. Or that I had more time–like Scarlett O’Hara, I’d worry about that in the morning. Or I had insufficient respect for the person speaking, didn’t take their warnings seriously.

So if I was going to say anything to my 20-year-old self, it would be a variation on that old AA advice to “Take the cotton out of your ears and put it in your mouth.”

  1. It’s almost like a trick question because the wisdom we have now emerged from a brain that changed and completed itself. So no matter what we told our past very young selves it’s not like they would have actually listened.
