OK today’s prompt has absolutely nothing to do with psychology, but it’s been renting space in my head all day so here goes.

Garth Stein originally ended The Art of Racing in the Rain with Enzo’s very beautiful, peaceful death. One of the best-written scenes I’ve ever read, and he should bloody well have stopped right there. In my opinion.

But I read somewhere that his editors insisted he tack on that ghastly epilogue/last chapter. Ugh.

I would have stopped where Stein did, and frankly wish I’d never read the epilogue (I knew I would regret it but).

I adored this book, though, otherwise. Absolutely adored it.

(If you so desire, you can snag a copy for yourself through my Bookshop storefront: A portion of the proceeds goes to the brick-and-mortar store of your choice, and I get a bit, too, all at no extra cost to you. See the Affiliate Disclosure page for more information.)

I’m no professional fiction author and so generally have no strong opinions about how a writer should or should not have done a thing. I have books I love, books I hate, and small things that might either annoy or thrill me about somebody else’s prose. But this! This ending has bugged me no end for 17 years 😆

If you liked it, I want to hear from you. Tell me in the comments why I’m wrong!
